Peg was a serving girl at the nearby Waddow Hall in the 18th century and legend has it that she broke her neck and died whilst fetching some water from the well. Peg’s spirit is said to demand a life every seven years and, traditionally, an animal or a bird has been drowned on Peg’s Night to satisfy her ghost.
